On Wednesday and Thursday, December 12 and 13, the Chicago Rabbinical Council (cRc), Agudath Israel of Illinois, Chai Lifeline, Chicago Mitzvah Campaign, and Refuah 311 coordinated a series of programs featuring Rabbi Dr. Avraham Steinberg. He is a noted Physician, and Ethicist, Director of the Medical Ethics Unit at Shaarei Zedek Medical Center and Co-Chairman of the Israeli National Council of Bioethics. He is a respected authority on medical halacha, and author of the Encyclopedia of Jewish Medical Ethics.

On Thursday evening he presented a seminar for medical professionals about “End-of Like Decision -Making – Navigating Secular and Jewish Views” at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel in Skokie. This was designed to sensitize and educate local clinicians to the particular concerns of Jewish patients when deciding medical treatment.  A broad range of local Rabbis joined each other for lunch at Sha’arei Tzedek Mishkan Yair on Thursday when Rabbi Dr. Steinberg spoke about their role in the process, “Decision Making in Complex Medical Situations — Halachic Principles and Medical Considerations to Guide Families.” The community had an opportunity to be better prepared to deal with these situations at Adas Yeshurun on Wednesday night, when Rabbi Steinberg addressed “Being Prepared to Make Medical-Treatment Decisions — What you need to consider, when to ask and how you can best advocate.”
