Lubavitch Girls High School, also fondly known as LGHS is located in West Rogers Park, Chicago. It is a school for both local high school girls and girls from around the world, who would not have an opportunity to go to a Jewish school otherwise. The school provides the girls with a nice and clean dormitory, meals, and all of their other basic necessities. The girls are also taken on trips and have programs throughout the year.

Every year the school puts on a production for the Jewish community of Chicago. Some of the students shine academically, but some shine in other ways. This production is a chance to show that each girl can make a difference and spread her talent.  A lot of time and effort is put into each scene, the choir, the costumes, and the scenery. These productions are unique. The girls are in charge of everything and make it all happen down to the very last detail.

This year LGHS is putting on a production of “The Nine Spoons.” It’s a story full of hope, courage, determination, and friendship. The story takes place during the Holocaust, in Auschwitz, in the freezing winter. It’s a few days before Chanukah and the girls are determined to be able to light the Menorah. Through a bunch of miracles, one girl’s magical talent, nine spoons, and a few friends, this becomes the reality!

The Nine Spoons teaches that nothing can get in the way of determination. These girls had nothing: Their families were torn apart and killed right in front of their eyes. They could’ve been killed for trying to spread Judaism through the camp. Nonetheless, they stayed strong.

Each girl contributed her little pard, her spoon. She did this for the sake of the Mitzvah. Everyone made a difference because nothing could’ve been done without the others help. We are all Jews. We are all connected. We can all make a difference. Everyone has a way that they can shine!
