People often wonder, what do REAL superheroes look like? I think the first thought that comes to mind is that they wear capes. Actually, at Chai Lifeline Midwest, we know that the truth is that the REAL superheroes often wear hospital gowns and have IV bags dripping life saving liquids into their ports. Those are the superheroes that Chai Lifeline’s annual Wish at the Wall dinner chose to honor this year.

Speaking about capes though, there were plenty of those at the Superhero Wish at the Wall fundraiser dinner this past Motzei Shabbos. The dramatic music could be heard from down the block and the entrance was no less outstanding. The foyer of the beautiful Berkowitz home was aglow with the faces of the Chai Lifeline Superheroes projected in a rotating fashion along the walls of their home. Adding to the dramatic superhero theme were masked and caped volunteers poised for flight on the elegant staircase. The smoke rising from the overflowing bar added to the mystique of the evening. All around were various stations including a sushi bar, steak and chicken hors devours, mini grilled burgers, various veggies and a gourmet handmade ice cream bar.

Just when one would think that the event couldn’t get any better, the program started. Daniel Glenner, our charismatic emcee, opened the event by thanking all the Chai Lifeline Superheroes and asking them to stand so that the audience could applaud for them. Everyone was then treated to an incredible video featuring the inspiring stories of a few of our superheroes. Then Yali Derman, blew the audience away with her amazing story. Many were emotional as she recounted  her story of when she was a scared young girl in the hospital Erev Purim, cheered up by connecting to her class Purim party through Chai Links network. Now, fast forward 17 years, and it was hard to stay dry eyed as we applauded for this superhero, who is now an accomplished nurse and philanthropist, who does her best to shine a light for those going through their dark times. Didn’t I say that not all superheroes wear capes?!

Next the audience was honored to hear from the Executive Vice President of Chai Lifeline, Rabbi Simcha Scholar. He touched our hearts by reminding us that even when it looks dark, there is a guiding Hand, pulling us all through. He rounded up the evening by reminding us all, that as much as Chai Lifeline Midwest has done, and is currently doing, there is still so much to be done.  It is only with the continued support of all the friends of Chai Lifeline, that we can really accomplish all that we need to.

On that note, Chai Lifeline Midwest takes this opportunity to extend a heartfelt thank you, to one more group of superheroes, our dedicated donors. At Chai Lifeline Midwest, we do dream big and it is those cape-less superhero donors who provide the magic to make it all possible. Thank you all so much, and to those reading this article, don’t just sit there, become a Chai Lifeline Superhero too and help us fly!
