It’s a little overwhelming to step onto the lawn and be inundated with paparazzi flashing cameras and a personal cheering squad. It was certainly a “star’s welcome,” which was befitting for the annual Hartman Family Foundation Wish at the Wall Gala, celebrating Chai Lifeline Midwest’s star supporters.

After posing for endless pictures both outside and inside the beautiful home of Mendy and Aviva Berger, our stars were treated to a gourmet buffet and a classy open bar. The food, catered by Hassid and Hipster, brought a whole new culinary experience to the gala.

Chai Lifeline conveyed to the guests just how crucial their support is to the organization, with a touching video about one of our Chai Lifeline warriors, Bryn Schneider. Bryn openly shared her journey with cancer and her ability to come out even stronger because of the incredible support provided by Chai Lifeline. After the video, Bryn’s mom, Dr. Shana Weiss, spoke for a few minutes about how meaningful Chai Lifeline has been to her and her family. Dr. Weiss is also a cancer survivor and appreciates firsthand what it means to go through such a difficult challenge, with the warmth, support, and love of the Chai Lifeline family.

During the evening, Chai Lifeline introduced its “shooting star” drinks initiative. All of the guests were invited to sponsor an important day to them, such as a birthday or anniversary, with the money donated to Chai Lifeline, to enable us to continue our important work. After choosing their special day, the donors were treated to a special drink topped with a “shooting star” sparkler. The energy and positive vibe that this created enabled us all to see how much our stars truly shine.

As case manager, I am often asked, “How does Chai Lifeline continue to offer so many various programs and services for so many families?” The answer is simple. It is thanks to our incredible star donors and supportive community that make it all possible. I’ve always wanted to see a real shooting star, but the heartfelt giving and the literal sparks flying at the 2019 Wish at the Wall Gala were more meaningful than any shooting star could ever be.
