The Midwest Center for Jewish Learning’s Book Club

The Midwest Center for Jewish Learning, an initiative of the Yeshiva University Kollel to create more learning opportunities for Jews of all religious backgrounds and learning levels, runs a holocaust themed book-club once every six weeks. The book club has one consistent challenge: ending on time. Each book we’ve read has sprung into deep, almost addictive conversation, leaving all the participants unable to walk out of the room. Most often, our discussions quickly turn into debates and arguments of the noblest form. Participants’ favorite part of the book club is the open-floor nature of the learning. Rabbi Yakov Danishefsky, MCJL Director, prepares topics and sources for conversation starters, but the discussion always takes on a life of its own. Each book chosen is connected with a holocaust theme and our discussion is graced with the presence and expertise of the Illinois Holocaust Museum and Education Center docents. Every participant leaves invigorated and deep in thought. Join us for the next discussion at the Skokie Public Library on Monday, March 12 at 2:30 PM. We are reading Edith Eva Lang’s bestseller, The Choice.
